David Roberts Award

 

At the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award 2005 the award was first presented, in memory of one of its great supporters, David Roberts.

The David Roberts Memorial Plate was awarded annually to a promising young traditional musician in South Lanarkshire.

2005
The 2005 recipient was Lauren Weir from Lesmahagow (fiddle, piano). Lauren started learning traditional music at Tinto Summer School in 2000, and has been dedicated to traditional music ever since. She has recently been selected to complete her schooling at the National School of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton High School.

2006
jim gold 2006 winner - copyright of lindsay addisonThe 2006 recipient was accordionist Jim Gold from Douglas. Jim had been  playing accordion for approx seven years and taught by Keith Dickson. He had at that time formed the Jim Gold Scottish Dance Band, which won first place at the NAAFC Festival at Musselburgh this year. Jim is a member of KODA and featured on the CD "Alternative Frequency" as well as performing in Germany last year and at the 2006 "T in The Park".

2007

tom gold, 2007 - copyright of lindsay addisonThe award went to fiddler Tom Gold from Douglas. Tom won the prestigious Musselburgh Festival Band Competition in 2006 as well participating in a challenging nine-day tour of Northern Germany and performing to a full "Ceilidh Tent" at T in the Park.

2008
kevin murphy accompanied by david foley performing in coulter hall - copyright of lindsay addisonThe award went to accordionist Kevin Murphy from Kirkintilloch. Kevin was an under 12 All Ireland Champion and in 2007 was voted the Glasgow Young Traditional Musician of the Year.

Aileen Campbell MSP presented the award to Kevin. Kevin is a fantastic box player as well as being great on many other instruments. He has a stellar career ahead of him.
